danaThe lovely Dana DeArmond selects AIDS/Lifecycle as Girlfriends Films’ April Charity of the Month. AIDS/Lifecycle, which is a 7-day, 545-mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles, raises funds for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center. Girlfriends Films will donate a $1,000 on behalf of Dana to her friend, Nick Youssef, who is participating in the event. “Recently I was asked to support someone very close to me in an AIDS/Lifecycle ride, and I was inspired to see how much I could do to make a difference,” states DeArmond. “I truly admire the sacrifice and commitment it takes to train for such a long bike ride. The amount of time spent on not only physical conditioning and training, but also to the actual fundraising itself, is astronomical. It is what’s inspired me to do all I can to contribute and to humble myself to be more public about my desire to give back to the causes I so desperately believe in and want to support.” DeArmond continues, “Girlfriends Films will be joining me in the sponsorship of one rider in this year’s AIDS/Lifecycle event. I am so very grateful to the good people at Girlfriends Films. Not only do they produce an excellent product, but they are kind, generous, honest, and good to more than just the people who support them, but also the people who work with them.” For more information about AIDS/Lifecycle, visit www.AIDSLifecycle.org. Madison Young Selects Planned Parenthood Federation of America to Receive $1000 from Girlfriends Films

532825_10150891490398487_2083970406_nThis month Girlfriends Films and Madison Young support Planned Parenthood Federation of America. Planned Parenthood has served as an essential resource for women through out the United States. Planned Parenthood provides accessible non-judgemental services and information to women without health insurance including pap-smears, birth control, and breast exams. As a freelance artist, small business owner, and feminist porn performer and director all of my 20s were spent uninsured and I was grateful for the excellent resources and care that Planned Parenthood provided to me personally and that they continue to provide to many of my friends, models, colleagues, and much of my community. I’m happy to support their organization however and whenever possible.

Girlfriends Films and Syren De Mer support Special Olympics with a $1000 donation. Appearing in 17 movies for Girlfriends Films, Syren De Mer is one of the studio’s most filmed performers the past year. De Mer’s selection for the Girlfriends Films’ October charity honors her daughter, an athlete in Special Olympics for 6 years. “The reason I chose Special Olympics is because our oldest daughter has been a participant in it for the last 6 years,” says Syren De Mer. “When she was born she suffered a major stroke, and now lives with a number of disabilities along with epilepsy. Special Olympics gave her a way to help cope with these. I really want to thank Special Olympics for everything they’ve done to help my daughter and family, as well as thank Girlfriends Films for giving me the opportunity to thank them in such a wonderful way.”

Alexa Smart

photo_33My name is Alexa Smart and I will be walking in the Santa Barbara Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in September 2012. I have been motivated to do this walk for various reasons and I want to share them with you.

Breast cancer has been in my inner circle for as long as I can remember. My mom’s best friend was first diagnosed with breast cancer in October 1997 she had a double mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Then in October 1998 she was diagnosed again with breast cancer. She underwent chemotherapy and radiation treatments again. She is cancer free today.

In August 2011 I was informed that my Aunt had stage 2 breast cancer. She had the following treatments; a lumpectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation. The wound from the lumpectomy became infected, due to the chemotherapy and radiation and the infection is not set to be fully gone until 2013. In addition, a dear friend of the family was diagnosed last year as well with stage 2 breast cancer. She opted for a mastectomy.

The events with my aunt and family friend, I began feeling helpless. I couldn’t do anything! I would buy things that promised to donate to breast cancer research. Even my debit card supports breast cancer research. Then one day I met a wonderful woman we began to chat and she told me that her 31 year old daughter, you guessed it, was just diagnosed with breast cancer. She told me about the Avon walk. I went from feeling helpless to helpful in a matter if seconds. I joined soon after. Upon signing up, I learned the donations received will help to fund early detection, new treatment options, research, and hopefully a cure.

I am walking for those men and women who are fighting the disease, those who haven’t yet been diagnosed, those who have survived, and those who have lost the fight.    I sincerely thank Girlfriends Films for your generous contabution.    Your donation will have an impact in the fight for the cure
